Die totale Sonnenfinsternis von Mittwoch, aufgenommen von einem Japanischen Satelliten, um 9:30 AM lokaler Zeit bedeckt der Schatten des Mondes Taiwan.

Das Foto ist eine Kombination aus Aufnahmen der Tagseite vom stationären Satellit MTSAT und älteren Aufnahmen der NASA, welche die Nachtseite überdecken. (via Wired Science)

Nachdem ich in den letzten Tagen fleißig @AP11_CAPCOM, @AP11_SPACECRAFT und @AP11_EAGLE (nicht nur) gefolgt bin und regelmäßig www.wechoosethemoon.org aufgesucht habe, um die Mondlandung nochmal in Echtzeit mitzuerleben, bekam ich nach meiner Rückkehr zur Erde meine Belohnung: Ein Zertifikat, dass ich auf dem Mond gelandet bin und wieder sicher zur Erde zurück gekehrt bin.

Ich habe es natürlich sofort ausgedruckt und es hat seinen Platz an der Wand neben dem “Ich fliege zum Mars – Zertifikat” gefunden!

Apollo 11 aus wissenschaftlicher Sicht

If all the Apollo 11 astronauts did was touch down and plant a flag, that would have been plenty. Fulfilling humanity’s dreams needs no peer review. But their contributions were scientific, too.

Es drehte sich bei der Mondlandung nicht nur darum, dass Weltraum-Wettrennen mit Russland zu gewinnen und Publicity zu erzeugen. Die Apollo Missionen hatten auch wissenschaftliche Gründe, Wired Science hat die wissenschaftlichen Aspekte von Apollo 11 in einem Beitrag zusammengefasst.

The distant, lonely, mysterious satellite that has fascinated mankind since the dawn of time is distant an lonely no more.
At 4:17 p.m. EST yesterday, astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin E. Aldrin Jr. touched down on the Sea of Tranquility in the lunar module Eagle and radioed back to Earth the historic repost: „Jesus fucking Christ, Houston. We’re on the fucking moon.“
Armstrong and Aldrin then made final technical and psychological preparations for the un-fucking-believableness of the next phase of the operation, the moon walk.
As two billion spellbound earthlings watched on television, Armstrong slowly descended the four steps leading out of the module, paused, and took one small but epoch-making step onto the soft, virgin soil.
„Holy fucking fuck… Are you fucking believing this? Over,“ Armstrong radioed back to NASA headquarters nearly 250,000 miles away. „I abso-fucking-lutely am standing on the surface of the fucking moon. I am talking to you from the goddamned fucking moon, Jesus H. Christ in a chicken basket.“
„Holy mother of fuck,“ the first man on the moon added.
„Roger, no fucking doubt about it,“ Mission Controller Peter Loveil replied. „A-fucking-firmative. Over.“

40 Jahre ist es jetzt her, dass Neil Armstrong mit den Worten, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind“, als erster Mensch den Mond betrat. Für die damalige Zeit war die Mondlandung eine technische Meisterleistung und mir bleibt nur zu sagen: Great job!

NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, or LRO, has returned its first imagery of the Apollo moon landing sites. The pictures show the Apollo missions’ lunar module descent stages sitting on the moon’s surface, as long shadows from a low sun angle make the modules’ locations evident.

Verschwörungstheoretiker aufgepasst: 40 Jahre nach der ersten Mondlandung hat der Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Fotos von den Landplätzen der Apollo-Missionen gemacht. Auf einigen Fotos kann man sogar die Fußspuren der Astronauten erkennen. Laut der NASA sollen zukünftige Fotos des LROC sogar die zwei- bis dreifache Auflösung haben. Da bin ich ja mal gespannt.

Irgendwie bin ich momentan auf dem Space-Trip. Umso besser, dass The Big Picture zum 40. Jubiläum der Mondlandung eine Bilderserie mit 40 überwältigenden Bildern zur Erinnerung an Apollo 11 im Angebot hat.

Collected here are 40 images from that journey four decades ago, when, in the words of astronaut Buzz Aldrin: “In this one moment, the world came together in peace for all mankind”.
